Volunteer
NIAD welcomes people interested in volunteering at the center. We and our clients are enriched by the addition of new skills, talents, and viewpoints. A variety of opportunities exist and we will tailor your volunteer experience to fit your talents, skills, preferences, and availability. Volunteers may work with clients in the studio, assist with exhibitions, help with special events, paint, lend a hand in the garden, or serve on our Board of Directors. We are also looking for people with specific skills such as marketing or graphic design. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Judith Zoon, by email or call 510-620-0290 for more information.
One of our volunteers was recently recognized for his service by the city of Richmond. Here’s the inspirational story and a list of our wonderful 2010-2011 Volunteers.
What Can You Do?
Volunteers at NIAD receive orientation and training and supervision. Check out the NIAD Volunteers, Interns and Substitutes Handbook for more information on volunteering.
Social Media/Blogging
Use Facebook, email, Twitter, blogging and other social media to create buzz, promote, and disseminate info on NIAD, the artists, the works, and events. Write short stories and take photos of daily activities which will appear on NIAD’s website and social media channels. The intention is to expand our followers, keep people informed, create name recognition and generate enthusiasm. Works with Director of Art Sales and Exhibitions.
Inventory Management
Sort completed and archived artwork from current and former artists so NIAD has a complete vision of existing inventory and ensure the collection is properly maintained. This will require strong organizational skills. Works with Director of Art Sales and Exhibitions.
Sales Assistant
The Dr. Elias and Florence Katz Gallery and gift shop are open to the public from 9 to 4 pm Monday through Friday. Learn the basics of store displays, maintining an online store, and curating artwork. Install artwork, learn about the art and the artists, create displays and process sales. Online tasks require basic photography, photo editing, and writing skills. Training on website interface provided. Works with Director of Art Sales and Exhibitions.

Studio Assistant
Provide assistance in the studio working one-on-one with clients, going on fieldtrips, helping with mobility issues and studio safety, and supporting teaching staff. We also need canvasses stretched, paper cut, prints pulled, and finishing details added to fiber art projects. Work with Studio Manager and teaching staff.
Special Events
Work with the Special Event Committee to plan and execute special events benefiting NIAD Art Center. Past experience a plus, but not necessary. Help plan the theme, food, program and promotion, as well as recruit others to work on the project. Work with Executive Director and/or Fundraising Committee.
Graphic Design
Design a new newsletter template, create announcement cards and a poster for our newest exhibition, or an ad for Raw Vision magazine. We need a graphic designer to take on one or all of these and other tasks, freeing our staff for other long-deferred projects. Works with Director of Sales and Exhibitions.
Gardener
NIAD’s garden is a wonderful opportunity for a gardener who can’t get enough. We grow flowers, vegetables and fruit, and we have 2 compost bins to manage. Help plan and implement a kitchen garden with the help of some of the clients.
Facility Maintenance
We always have a list of minor maintenance items such as painting, staining, building artwork storage, and minor repairs. If you enjoy any of these tasks, we are happy to supply the materials and tools. Works with Administrative Coordinator.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors sets policy, fundraises and works in the community to promote NIAD Art Center. Board members attend 6 meetings a year, plus time spent working on Board committees. If you are interested in becoming one of our directors, please contact Deb Dyer by email or phone at 510-620-0290 for more information.
